The class will start with really simple photography of human-sized miniatures requiring little beyond a decent cell-phone camera. We will then discuss the use of more specialist cameras, including a basic discussion of exposure triangle, color temperature, depth of field, and composition. Finally, we will discuss how to make the changes necessary to work with less basic choices of lighting and background. We will also discuss post processing, both from the point of view of image quality and the ethics of retouching for public viewing and contest entry. If there is interest The post processing discussion will largely be from the point of view of Adobe software, but the concepts are transferable to GIMP or similar products as well. I do not plan to discuss flash photography at length. The photography in class will use continuous lighting for simplicity, but I will mention some of the differences required for flash photography. To participate in the hands-on part of the class, the students will need to bring their own cameras. Additionally, a tripod or other stabilizing support will be very useful. A handout will be provided.
